This Guided one day cycle adventure takes in some of the most stunning scenery on Tasman’s Great Taste Trail. There are many fun stops along the way, including award winning wineries, craft breweries, and the Classic Car Museum to name a few.
Your Kiwi Journeys guide will take you along the old rail route from Nelson City to Richmond then turn onto the picturesque Coastal Route to Rabbit Island and Mapua. This is all grade one riding (easy) where a moderate fitness level is required. A short ride on the Mapua Ferry has us landing on the Mapua Wharf where the vibe and atmosphere is very relaxing.
This is also a great day out for the whole family.
Itinerary
Your guide will meet you at our depot around 9.00am (this is flexible), where we will fit you to your bike, and give you all the information you will need to enjoy the day ahead. At this point Kiwi Journeys will get a feel for your interests, activities and food, allowing us customise your day to suit. For example you may be interested in Wineries, Craft Beer, Brewery Tours, Nelsons Classic Car Museum or a tour of Pics Peanut Butter World to name a few.
We will follow the blue Great Taste Trail markers out of Nelson City, following the old Railway Reserve Cycle Path on the way to Richmond.
We may choose to enjoy a craft beer/lunch from Stoke or Eddyline Brewery before we turn onto the coastal path where there will be a chance to sample and purchase some award-winning wines at Te-Mania or Seifried Wineries. Seifrieds is the oldest and largest Winery in Nelson.
Tip: A fantastic lunch stop is the popular ‘Grape Escape Café’.
After lunch we will experience the coastal boardwalks of the Waimea Estuary and fertile farmland, which is home to a range of internationally significant bird species including the White Heron. After crossing the spectacular Waimea Swing Bridge it is then ten kilometres to the Mapua Ferry landing. The trail takes us alongside the white sand beach of Rabbit Island. This is a great place to stop for views and photos before Ferry landing. A short trip across the channel on the iconic Mapua Ferry lands us at the Mapua Wharf where you can enjoy the buzzing atmosphere of galleries, studios, restaurants, cafes, shops and the boutique Golden Bear Brewery before being transported back to Nelson City (or your accommodation) at 6.00pm.
Today’s ride is grade one (easy). This tour has been designed for enjoyment, there is plenty of time to relax and take everything in, especially the amazing food, beverages and activities on offer. If you would like to treat yourself then we recommend an upgrade to one of our high end pedal assist E-bikes! These are lots of fun.
