Itinerary

Day 1 (Option A)
Kaiteriteri to Mapua
42 km

Embark on a captivating cycling journey starting at our Nelson Depot. Once you're fitted with the ideal bike, we'll transport you to the enchanting Kaiteriteri. There, the Easy Rider trail awaits—a 4km path winding through the dense native beech forest, challenging you with its tight turns and switchbacks.

Continue through the scenic farmlands and orchards of Riwaka, where delightful cafes like Mrs. Smith's Cafe and Little Dynamite Food and Coffee offer perfect pit stops. The nearby Hop Federation Brewery is a must-visit for craft beer enthusiasts.

The route then takes you along the stunning coastal trail of Motueka, rich in birdlife and breathtaking views. A recommended pause at Toad Hall provides a refreshing break with lunch or coffee amidst picturesque surroundings.

Your adventure intensifies as you ascend Tasman View Road, climbing 200 meters over 4 km. The reward? Unparalleled 360-degree views of Tasman Bay and the surrounding ranges.

Conclude your day in the tranquil seaside village of Mapua, where your cozy accommodation awaits. Reflect on a day immersed in the natural beauty of apple orchards, vineyards, the majestic Mt. Arthur Range, the Janie Seddon shipwreck, and the serene coastline.

Day 1 (Option B)
Spooners Tunnel to Mapua
51 km

Embark on a unique 51km cycling adventure from Spooners Tunnel to Mapua. Start your journey at our Nelson City depot, where a shuttle takes you to Spooners Tunnel, the longest tunnel open to cyclists in the southern hemisphere. Here, our driver will offer trail tips to enhance your experience.

Pedal through rural Nelson, crossing the Waimea River via a swing bridge with stunning views of the New Zealand Alps. Continue through picturesque vineyards and orchards into Richmond, then follow the Coastal Route to Mapua. Consider a delightful detour to Old Factory Corner between Ranzau Road in Hope and McShanes Road in Appleby. Enjoy cheese tasting and real fruit ice cream at this local hub.

As you cycle down McShanes Road, take in expansive views from coastal boardwalks over Waimea Estuary, a haven for birdlife, including the Kotuku or White Heron. For wine lovers, a visit to Nelson’s largest winery, Seifried Estate Winery, offers a perfect lunch stop or tasting session before reaching Rabbit Island's main beach.

Finish your day with a brief ferry ride to Mapua Wharf. Explore the local shops and galleries, and conclude with dinner at spots like the Jellyfish Restaurant and Bar or local breweries and wine bars.

This journey combines Wakefield's historical charm with Mapua's natural beauty and gastronomic delights for an unforgettable cycling experience.

Day 2
Mapua - Nelson
33 km

Start day two of your cycling tour with a leisurely breakfast in Mapua, exploring its vibrant galleries, studios, and shops. As you depart, retrace your steps across the scenic Waimea Inlet via the Mapua Ferry, setting off at 10 am towards Richmond along the picturesque Coastal Route.

En route, the area's craft breweries, quaint galleries, and inviting cafes are perfect for a pause. Consider a unique lunch experience at Pics Peanut Butter World or other local delights.

For those intrigued by vintage charm, the Nelson Classic Car Museum is a must-visit, or perhaps McCashins Brewery, for a taste of local brews. Other notable stops include the rustic Honest Lawyer Country Pub, Eddyline Pizzeria for artisan pizzas, and the Grape Escape Café for a tranquil break.

Choose your return path to Nelson:

Old Railway Route: Ideal for visiting McCashins Brewery or Pics Peanut Butter World, this route follows historical tracks through Stoke into Nelson.
Coastal Route: This route is best for those heading to the Nelson Classic Car Museum or The Honest Lawyer, as it offers continuous coastal vistas towards Nelson.

Your journey features highlights such as the vibrant Nelson CBD, the iconic Mapua Ferry, and the bustling Mapua Wharf. Enjoy the coastal boardwalks, the Waimea River and its suspension bridge, and the expansive beachfront of Rabbit Island, culminating in a rich tapestry of nature, culture, and culinary delights.
