Itinerary

Arrival

Whether you are arriving by plane into Hokitika, Tranz Alpine Train into Greymouth or your own transport, Kiwi Journeys will shuttle you to our Hokitika depot for a pre tour briefing and bike fit. Once finished you are free to grab some supplies then its off to the Ross Beach Top 10 Holiday Park where you can settle into your very unique accommodation.

The boutique holiday park is like no other. Your accommodation and amenities are in re-purposed shipping containers, blissfully set amongst a natural landscape of NZ Flax.

Sit on your deck and relax for the afternoon or explore the ‘Wild West Coast’ beach right on your doorstep before you head up to the Empire Hotel for a fantastic roast dinner and an experience like no other (trust us!)

After dinner and fun times with your friends, settle into your comfy pod and drift off to sleep listening to the sound of the ocean breaking on the shoreline.

Day 1
Ross - Hokitika
29 km

After breakfast it’s time to start your adventure! You will cycle over the Totara River, and along the Ross Ruatapu Railway line, taking in incredible views of the mighty Mt Cook and Mt Tasman.

You will then cycle through wetlands and native bush before giving the bikes a rest at the Treetop Walkway. Here, you will experience the native forest, birdsong and views of Lake Mahinapua by foot from the heights of a tree canopy. The trail continues along the Mahinapua Tramline before heading to your accommodation for the night.

Included in your tour is an amazing cruise on the stunning Lake Mahinapua.

Day 2
Hokitika Gorge - Lake Kaniere Loop
28 km

Your shuttle will arrive just before 9.00am, load you and your bikes then off to the Hokitika Gorge. After a 30 minute drive to the carpark, there is a short walk (loop) through lush native bush to the rocky gorge, where you witness the calm turquoise blue water from the incredible viewing platforms. The water has to be seen to be believed!

This addition to our popular tour has come from customer feedback, adding to your ‘Wonderful Wilderness’ experience.

After the amazing Gorge experience, its off to Lake Kaniere where Hans Bay or Sunny Bight are fantastic locations for a lunch break. You will also capture some incredible photos!

Lake Kaniere is 8km long and 195m deep, home to towering kahikatea trees and wonderful birdlife.

Once you leave Lake Kaniere you are in for a real treat! (and its predominately down hill)

Enter another stand of native bush and Meander along the historic Kaniere Water Race (hand-dug in 1875), Hokitika’s water supply.

Kaniere Tram Road will take you out of the wop-wops and all the way to Hokitika, where you'll find some great art and craft shops, and most importantly cafés and restaurants for afternoon tea or a nice cold ale.

Scenic Waterways is approximately 4km’s from Hokitika.

Day 3
Canoe Cove to Kumara
47 km

After breakfast, at 8.30am, you will be shuttled to Canoe Cove to commence your ride. This is a fabulous day out and you have all day to enjoy it.

It starts with a gentle ride up the Arahura Valley on gravel road to Milltown.

Today you have a short climb up to 300 meters at the Kawhaka Pass before the long descent in to Kumara.

The Southern Alps make another welcome appearance today so take the time to snap some photos. From here, smooth sweeping boardwalk and bush trail will take you down into Kumara.

Evening meal (own cost): There is a restaurant on site for dinner.

Your bags will be transferred to your accommodation – please collect from the hotel dining area.
