Kiwi Journeys are excited to release the new ‘Gorge on Cycle and Scenery’ tour. As the name suggests this one-day tour has it all, including a guided tour of the spectacular Hokitika Gorge and an amazing bike ride that includes Lake Kaniere, the historic water races and pristine native bush.

This is a fantastic day out for the whole family. And best of all its predominantly flat or down hill!

Itinerary

One Day - Hokitika Gorge and Dorothy Falls - 26km

One Day
Hokitika Gorge and Dorothy Falls
26 km

We suggest you grab a packed lunch before arriving at the Kiwi Journeys depot at 8.40am, for a short briefing and bike fitting (or at an arranged time).

At 9.00am its off to the Hokitika Gorge. After a 30-minute drive to the carpark, there is a short walk through lush native bush to the rocky gorge, where you witness the calm turquoise blue water from the incredible viewing platforms. The water must be seen to be believed! NB: The guided walk will take approximately 45 minutes.

After the amazing Gorge experience, it’s off to Dorothy Falls (30-minute drive) and time to climb on your bikes. A beautiful 5km ride amongst native bush, around the edge of Lake Kaniere to Hans Bay, which is a fantastic location for a lunch break. You will also capture some incredible photos! NB: Don’t miss a detour to Sunny Bight. This is located on the other side of the lake opposite Hans Bay (another great location for a lunch stop).

Lake Kaniere is 8km long and 195m deep, home to towering Kahikatea trees and wonderful birdlife.

Once you leave Lake Kaniere you are in for a real treat (and its predominately downhill)!

Enter another stand of native bush and meander along the historic Kaniere Water Race (hand-dug in 1875), Hokitika’s water supply. This is amazing!

Kaniere Tram Road will take you out of the wop-wops and all the way to Hokitika and back to Kiwi Journeys depot. You may like to browse the art and craft shops and most importantly, cafés and restaurants for afternoon tea or a nice cold ale. NB: You will most likely reach Hokitika around 2.30pm.
