Enjoy the scenic descent to the charming town of Chatto Creek, home to a quirky tiny Post Office, and continue to the vibrant Alexandra. This route blends breathtaking landscapes with delightful historical touches, offering an unforgettable adventure through picturesque views and local charm.


Itinerary


Day 1
Oturehua to Omakau
30 km

Embark on a captivating ride through the stunning Poolburn Gorge and the picturesque Ida Valley. Begin in Oturehua, where you can explore the historic Gilchrist Store, a delightful blend of old-world charm and modern touches. Just after you leave, visit the Hayes Engineering Works, a fascinating site preserving Central Otago's engineering heritage, perfect for a morning tea break.

As you cycle towards Poolburn Gorge, prepare to be awed by this remarkable section of the trail. The trail features the dramatic 37-meter-high Poolburn Viaduct, offering spectacular views over the gorge below. You'll traverse two impressive tunnels carved through rock, enhancing the sense of adventure. The rugged beauty of the gorge and its serene setting provide an ideal spot for a picnic lunch, allowing you to savour the natural landscapes.

Your journey continues to Lauder, a charming village with a welcoming atmosphere. After exploring this quaint spot, a short 7-kilometre ride takes you to your cozy accommodation in Omakau, where you can unwind and reflect on the day's unforgettable experiences.

Please note that no food is available from Oturehua until Omakau, so a packed lunch is recommended.

Day 2
Omakau to Clyde
37 km

Today’s 37-kilometre ride from Omakau to Clyde is packed with scenic highlights and charming stops. Start your day with a detour to Ophir, a historic town that feels like stepping back in time. Explore the restored Post & Telegraph Office, 1895 Courthouse, and 1870s Police Station, and cross the impressive Daniel O’Connell Suspension Bridge on a 5-kilometer round trip.

Back on the trail, enjoy the easy downhill ride to Chatto Creek, just 12 kilometres away. Here, the Chatto Creek Hotel, a delightful old country pub, is perfect for a coffee and a snack. Don’t miss New Zealand’s smallest Post Office, a quirky gem that’s just big enough for a mailbox and a counter.

Continue for 17 kilometres to Alexandra, a vibrant town offering excellent food and coffee. The trail features stunning views of the surrounding landscapes and charming countryside. After another 8 kilometres, you’ll reach Clyde, where a shuttle will take you back to Cromwell.
