Itinerary
Start your adventure with a shuttle from Cromwell to Omakau, where your cycling journey begins. Today's ride takes you through the stunning Poolburn Gorge, a highlight of the Otago Central Rail Trail. As you descend into the gorge, you'll be surrounded by dramatic schist rock formations and enjoy views of the shimmering Poolburn Reservoir.
The trail features historic tunnels and viaducts that add excitement to your ride. The tunnels, carved through solid rock, offer a cool, dark passage, while the viaducts provide fantastic views over deep gorges. The well-maintained trail combines smooth and gravel sections for a thrilling yet comfortable experience.
If time allows, detour to the charming town of Ophir, where you can explore the restored Post & Telegraph Office, 1895 Courthouse, and 1870's Police Station. The round trip includes the picturesque Daniel O'Connell suspension bridge, adding local charm to your journey.
As you continue, you'll pass through the serene Ida Valley and reach Oturehua. Don't miss the Hayes Engineering Works, a preserved historic site that showcases the area's pioneering spirit.
Finish your day with a 12km ride to Wedderburn, a rural community known for its friendly atmosphere and historic charm. Relax and reflect on your day's adventure in this picturesque setting.
Begin Day Two with an exhilarating downhill ride from Wedderburn to Ranfurly, a 13.5km journey through the charming Art Deco town of Maniototo. Ranfurly's distinctive 1930s architecture, with its geometric shapes and vibrant colours, creates a nostalgic atmosphere perfect for a coffee break. As you stretch your legs, soak in the panoramic views of the Kakanui Mountains and explore this historic town, known for its well-preserved Art Deco buildings. It's also an ideal spot to top up your supplies before continuing.
Pedal on from Ranfurly to Waipiata, just 7.5km away, where the local hotel is famous for its enormous pies—a must-try for a satisfying lunch. This quaint countryside town offers a peaceful respite and a chance to refuel.
The final 25km stretch takes you from Waipiata to Hyde. You'll cross the impressive Prices Creek Viaduct, a marvel of engineering that spans a deep gorge, providing stunning views as you ride across. Shortly after, pedal through a historic tunnel carved through rock, adding a touch of adventure with its cool, dark passage.
As you approach Hyde, the trail opens onto the vast Strath Taieri plains, offering sweeping views of the open landscape. A shuttle will transfer you back to Cromwell, concluding a day rich in scenic beauty and memorable cycling.
